Concept introduction:
Cost Volume Profit (CVP) Analysis:
The Cost Volume Profit analysis is the analysis of the relation between cost, volume, and profit of a product. It analyzes the cost and profits at the different level of production, in order to determine the breakeven point and required the level of sales to earn the desired profit.
Contribution margin means the margin that is left with the company after recovering variable cost out of revenue earned by selling smart phones. The formula for contribution margin is as follows:
Contribution margin = Sales - Variable cost.
Similarly contribution margin ratio = Contribution/sales
Breakeven Point:
The Breakeven point is the level of sales at which the net profit is nil. It can be explained as a situation where the business is generating a sale that is equal to the expenses incurred and hence no

- Salvador Manufacturing builds and sells snowboards, skis and poles. The sales price and variable cost for each follows: Their sales mix is reflected in the ratio 7:3:2. If annual fixed costs shared by the three products are $196,200, how many units of each product will need to be sold in order for Salvador to break even?arrow_forwardManatoah Manufacturing produces 3 models of window air conditioners: model 101, model 201, and model 301. The sales price and variable costs for these three models are as follows: The current product mix is 4:3:2. The three models share total fixed costs of $430,000. Calculate the sales price per composite unit. What is the contribution margin per composite unit? Calculate Manatoahs break-even point in both dollars and units. Using an income statement format, prove that this is the break-even point.arrow_forwardFaldo Company produces a single product. The projected income statement for the coming year, based on sales of 200,000 units, is as follows: Required: 1. Compute the unit contribution margin and the units that must be sold to break even. Suppose that 30,000 units are sold above the break-even point. What is the profit? 2. Compute the contribution margin ratio and the break-even point in dollars. Suppose that revenues are 200,000 greater than expected. What would the total profit be? 3. Compute the margin of safety in sales revenue. 4. Compute the operating leverage. Compute the new profit level if sales are 20 percent higher than expected. 5. How many units must be sold to earn a profit equal to 10 percent of sales? 6. Assume the income tax rate is 40 percent. How many units must be sold to earn an after-tax profit of 180,000?arrow_forward
- a. Given the following graphs, calculate the total fixed costs, variable costs per unit, andsales price for Firm A. Firm B’s fixed costs are $120,000, its variable costs per unit are$4, and its sales price is $8 per unit.b. Which firm has the higher operating leverage at any given level of sales? Explain.c. At what sales level, in units, do both firms earn the same operating profit?arrow_forwardPROBLEM SOLVING: (show step by step solution) Break-even and target profits. Analysis of the operations of FAST Company shows the fixed costs to be P200,000 and the variable costs to be P8 per unit. Selling price is P16 per unit. Derive the break-even point expressed in units. How many units must the firm sell to earn a profit of P280,000? What would profits be if revenue from sales were P2,000,000?arrow_forwardMost businesses sell several products at varying prices. The products often have different unit variable costs. Thus, the total profit and the breakeven point depend on the proportions in which the products are sold. Sales mix is the relative contribution of sales among various products sold by a firm. Assume that the sales of Jordan Incorporated for a typical year are as follows: Product Units Sold Sales Mix A 18,288 80% B 4,572 20 Total 22,860 100% Assume the following unit selling prices and unit variable costs: Product Selling Price Variable Cost Contribution Margin A $ 89 $ 74 $ 15 B 149 109 40 Fixed costs are $418,000 per year. Assume that the sales mix, expressed in terms of relative physical units sold, is constant as sales volume changes. Required: Determine the breakeven point in total units and, for this breakeven point, calculate the number of units of A and B that must be sold. Use the weighted-average contribution margin approach. Determine the…arrow_forward

- Prepare an Excel worksheet that illustrates cost-volume-profit (CVP) analysis, also referred to as breakeven analysis. Assume that a particular product sold at Astro Ltd a US toy company has a sales price per unit of $4.00; variable cost per unit of $2.20; and total fixed cost of $90,000. 1) Calculate the contribution margin per unit, the break-even point in units of sales, and the break-even point in dollars of sales. In the input area, show sales price per unit, variable cost per unit, and total fixed cost. In the output area, show contribution margin per unit, breakeven point in units, and breakeven point in dollars computed using appropriate formulas. 2) Assume that the planning team at Astro Ltd estimates that for the next planning period selling price for this product will increase 40%; variable expenses will decrease 25%; and that total fixed cost will decrease 25%.
