Chapter 7, Problem 33P

The rosy (ry) gene of Drosophila encodes an enzyme called xanthine dehydrogenase. Flies homozygous for ry mutations exhibit a rosy eye color. Heterozygous females were made that had ry41 Sb on one homolog and Ly ry564 on the other homolog, where ry41 and ry564 are two independently isolated alleles of ry. Ly [Lyra (narrow) wings] and Sb [Stubble (short) bristles] are dominant mutant alleles of genes to the left and right of ry, respectively. These females are now mated to males homozygous for ry41. Out of 100,000 progeny, 8 have wild-type eyes, Lyra wings, and Stubble bristles, while the remainder have rosy eyes.

a. What is the order of these two ry mutations relative to the flanking genes Ly and Sb?
b. What is the genetic distance separating ry41 and ry564?

A maternal effect gene in Drosophila, called torso, is found as a recessive allele that prevents the correct development of anterior- and posterior-most structures. A wild-type (homozygous) male iscrossed to a female of unknown genotype. This mating produces 100% larva that are missing theiranterior- and posterior-most structures and therefore die during early development. What is the genotype and phenotype of the female fly in this cross? What are the genotypes andphenotypes of the female fly’s parents? Show COMPLETE cross.   Maternal genotype:Paternal genotype:F1 genotype:F1 phenotype:
In Drosophila, Lyra (Ly) and stubble (Sb) are dominant mutations located at locus 40 and 58, on chromosome 3. A recessive mutation with bright eyes was discovered and shown also to be on chromosome 3.  A map was obtained by crossing a female who was heterozygous for all three mutations to a male homozygous for the bright red mutation (temporarily will be called br).  The following data were obtained.   Ly       Sb      br       404                         +        +        br          2 Ly       +        br       75                           +        Sb      +          59 Ly       +        +        18                           +        Sb      br          16 Ly       Sb      +        4                             +        +        +          422   Diagram the cross and determine the location of the bright red mutation on chromosome 3
Drosophila females heterozygous for three recessive mutations, a, b, and c , were crossed to males homozygous for all three mutations. The cross yielded the following results:  in the image  Q. Construct a linkage map showing the correct order of these genes and estimate the distances between them.
