Chapter 7, Problem 3PA
Summary Introduction
Interpretation: the process of working
Concept introduction:Consider the process of hospital admission. Patients come to the hospital at an average rate of 10 patients per hour. Before registration, there is a buffer (B1) of 5 patients. After registration, there is a second buffer (B2) of 10 patients before the patients do their checkup by the doctor. Once the checkup is done, 90% of the patients just leave the process and the rest 10% take admission.

A dentist’s office has three steps to a routine visit:
A receptionist enters the patient’s data
A dental assistant takes x-rays of the patient
A dentist performs a checkup on the patient
If there are 2 receptionists at the office, 3 dental assistants, and 4 dentists, draw a process flow diagram for this office. Remember to account for the multiple resources at each stage.
Bill’s Barbershop has two barbers available to cut customers’ hair. Both barbers provide roughly the same experience and skill, but one is just a little bit slower than the other. The process flow in Figure shows that all customers go through steps B1 and B2 and then can be served at either of the two barbers at step B3. The process ends for all customers at step B4. The numbers in parentheses indicate the minutes it takes that activity to process a customer.a. How long does it take the average customer to complete this process?b. What single activity is the bottleneck for the entire process?c. How many customers can this process serve in an hour?
What type of process—project, job shop, flow shop, and continuous flow—would most likely be used to produce the following? Explain your reasoning.

- The following flow chart shows the entire manufacturing process at KD Manufacturing, which consists of six independent operations processes (i.e. sawing, sanding, drilling, reshaping, welding, and assembly). The entire process flow starts with the input of three different parts, Part I, Part II and Part III, each entering a different input line. Three parts meet later for the welding, whichever welding station is available (two identical welding stations work independently). After welding is completed, the product is sent to one of the three assembly stations (which are in parallel). The chart also shows the processing time per unit (in minutes) for each operation. Each of sawing, sanding, drilling and reshaping stations is handled by a different worker. Two workers handle welding, each at one welding station. Another three workers handle the assembly process independently, one at each assembly station. Process A uses one person to setup the job and do the pre-casting. If this approach is used, an experienced person can complete an average of 20 jobs per day. Process B uses two people. One person does the setup and the second person does the actual pre-casting. Setup on one job can be done while pre-casting is being completed on another but pre-casting must be completed on a job before the pre-cast machine can start processing the next. After some practice, this second process can be completed with a standard time of 10 minutes for setup and 15 minutes for actual pre-casting. In either case, assume an 8-hour day, 5 days per week, 250 days per year. 3. Assuming ideal conditions, what is the maximum capacity of process B? 4.
