Question
Chapter 8, Problem 58TQ
Summary Introduction
To review:
The levels of blood glucose in a person after the intake of carbohydrates, provided that the person is deficient in glucokinase production.
Introduction:
The glucokinase (GK) enzyme is also known as hexokinase IV. It is able to add a phosphoryl group to hexose sugar, like glucose. However, unlike other hexokinases (hexokinase I, II and III), GK is not inhibited by the glucose-6-phosphate and has lower kinetic velocity. GK enzyme is prominently present in organs that require a continuous supply of glucose, like the brain (hypothalamus). GK is also present in liver cells (alpha Langerhans and beta Langerhans) and enterocytes (intestinal cells).
