Interpretation:
The type of bond between
Concept Introduction:
The bond result from the electrostatic force of attraction between oppositely charged ions is called ionic bond and the bond result from the mutual sharing of electrons between atoms is called covalent bond.
The covalent bond that results from unequal sharing of electrons between atoms is called polar covalent bond. Polar covalent bonds arise when the electronegativities of the two atoms are not equal.
Nonpolar covalent bonds arise when the electronegativities of the two atoms are equal and electrons are shared equally.

- Draw Lewis diagrams for the following compounds. In the formula the symbol of the central atom is given first. (Hint: The valence octet may be expanded for the central atom.) (a) PF5 (b) SF4 (c) XeO2F2arrow_forwardGiven the following electro negativities C=2.5N=3.0S=2.6 what is the central atom in CNS-?arrow_forwardDraw Lewis diagrams for the following ions. In the formula the symbol of the central atom is given first. (Hint:The valence octet may be expanded for the central atom.) (a) BrO4 (b) PCl6 (c) XeF6+arrow_forward
- Arrange the following bonds in order of decreasing polarity: CC,CH,CN,CO,CS. State the element that is the negative pole in each. You may refer to Figure 12-15.arrow_forwardMixing SbCl3 and GaCl3 in a 1:1 molar ratio (using liquid sulfur dioxide as a solvent) gives a solid ionic compound of empirical formula GaSbCl6 . A controversy arises over whether this compound is (SbCl2+)(GaCl4) or (GaCl2+)(SbCl4) . (a) Predict the molecular structures of the two anions. (b) It is learned that the cation in the compound has a bent structure. Based on this fact, which formulation is more likely to be correct?arrow_forwardConsider the following bonds: GeSe, BrSe, BrGe. Indicate the direction of polarity of each. Which bond is expected to be the most polar?arrow_forward
- Considering only ions with charges of 1+,2+,1, and 2 or neutral atoms, give the symbols for four species that are isolectronic with the chloride ion, Cl.arrow_forwardUnder certain conditions, the stable form of sulfur consists of rings of eight sulfur atoms. Draw the Lewis diagram for such a ring.arrow_forwardC4H10O is the formula of diethyl ether. The same group of atoms is attached on either side of the oxygen atom. Draw the Lewis diagram. Diethyl ether was among the first anesthetics used in surgery, but it has been largely replaced by safer anesthetics today.arrow_forward
