Chapter B, Problem 30RP
Patent Production. Refer to Problem 29, where we considered the regression of number of patents per 1000 workers on 10 potential predictor variables. Use the technology of your choice to do the following.
- a. Apply the maximum-R2 criterion to obtain a regression equation.
- b. Apply the adjusted- R2 criterion to obtain a regression equation.
- c. Apply the Mallows' Cp criterion to obtain a regression equation.
- d. Are the regression equations that you obtained in parts (a), (b), and (c) the same?
- e. Use the analyses in parts (a), (b), and (c) to select a regression equation for these data. For the regression equation that you select, obtain plots of residuals versus fitted values, residuals versus the included predictor variables, and a normal probability plot of the residuals. Perform a residual analysis to assess the appropriateness of the regression equation, constancy of the conditional standard deviations, and normality of the conditional distributions. Check for outliers and influential observations.

2.state each of the five assumptions of the classical regression model (OLS) and give an intuitive explanation of the meaning and need for each of them
A)What would the consequence be for a regression model if the errors were not homoscedastic?
(B) How might you proceed if you found that (b) were actually the case?
Answer true or false to the following statements and explain your answers.
a. In a multiple linear regression analysis, the test of H0: β1 = 0 can be affected by what other predictor variables are in the multiple linear regression equation.
b. If the F-test for the utility of the multiple linear regression equation rejects the null hypothesis of H0: β1 = β2 = ... = βk = 0, then each individual t-test of H0: βi = 0, i = 1,... , k, will result in rejection of the null hypothesis.
c. The number of degrees of freedom for the tα/2-value used in constructing a confidence interval for a population regression coefficient is the same as the number of degrees of freedom for the mean square error (MSE).
