Suffix denotes the presence of functional group if any in the molecule.  It can be an alkene, alkyne, alcohol, carboxylic acid, alcohol etc.

Root word represents the longest continuous carbon skeleton of the organic molecule.

For naming the alkyl groups, the parent alkane is found out by counting the number of carbon atoms and then replacing “-ane” with “-yl” in the name.  The alkyl group is obtained by removing a hydrogen atom from the parent alkane.

Explanation

The given name of the compound is 2-ethyl-2-methylpropane.  From the name it is understood that the parent carbon chain is propane and it contains three carbon atoms.  The parent chain can be drawn as shown below,

From the name of the given alkane, the substituents that are present can be identified.  In this case, the substituents are one ethyl group at second carbon atom and a methyl group at second carbon atom.
