In a hydrocarbon structure, each and every carbon atoms are classified as primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary carbon atom.

If a carbon atom in an organic molecule is directly bonded to only one another carbon atom is known as primary carbon atom.

If a carbon atom in an organic molecule is directly bonded to two other carbon atoms is known as secondary carbon atom.

If a carbon atom in an organic molecule is directly bonded to three other carbon atoms is known as tertiary carbon atom.

If a carbon atom in an organic molecule is directly bonded to four another carbon atom is known as quaternary carbon atom.

These carbon atoms are denoted by notations as, 1° for primary, 2° for secondary, 3° for tertiary and 4° for quaternary.

Explanation

Given structures are,

On seeing the first structure it is found that there are four primary carbon atoms present.  This means there are four carbon atoms are bonded to one another carbon atom.  One carbon atom is bonded to two other carbon atoms.  This means there is one secondary carbon atom.  Two carbon atoms are bonded to three other carbon atoms.  This means there are two tertiary carbon atom.  This structure does not contain any carbon atom that is bonded to four carbon atoms.  Hence, this structure does not have any quaternary carbon atom.  The primary carbon, secondary carbon, tertiary carbons are indicated for the first structure as shown below,
