Question
Chapter 11, Problem 11.59EP
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
In an ion pair formation the fate of radiation “particle” involved has to be given.
Concept Introduction:
Radiations emitted from a radionuclide are very harmful at higher levels. Radiations cannot be heard, tasted, seen, or even felt. Radiation can be detected by making use of the fact that the radiation ionizes molecules and atoms. Radiations are classified as ionizing radiation and non-ionizing radiations. When an ionizing radiation hits an atom or molecule ion pairs are formed. Free radicals are also formed along with the ion pairs.

In Experiment 7, Isolation of Citrus Oils, the compounds isolated were the monoterpene compounds alpha-pinene, beta-pinene,
limonene, myrcene and gamma-terpinene. The citrus oils were analyzed using gas chromatography, which separates compounds
based on polarity and boiling point. Column chromatography and thin layer chromatography work on similar separation principles
as gas chromatography, but rely only on polarity of compounds and solvents for separation. Explain why neither column
chromatography nor thin layer chromatography would be appropriate separation methods for the terpenes isolated in Experiment
7.
