Chapter 12, Problem 20P
Summary Introduction

To analyze:

Can the homologous recombination be considereda mutational event that resultsin gene conversion? Write justification for the answer.

Introduction:

Recombination is the exchange of DNA strands, in which new nucleotide rearrangement takes place. There are three types of recombination a) Homologous recombination; b) Site specific recombination; and c) Transposition.

In homologous recombination, nucleotide sequences are switched between two identical molecules of DNA.

Theunidirectional exchange of nucleotide sequences between similar sequences is gene conversion. In gene conversion, to repair one stretch of sequence, another stretch of arrangement is used as a model.

In each of the illustrations below, a segment of a chromosome has two copies of a transposable element. In panel a, they are oriented in the same direction, whereas in panel b they are in opposite directions. A double strand break occurs in element A and is repaired by homologous recombination using element B as a repair template. For each case, what will the chromosome look like after homologous recombination occurs? Choose one of the five options below, 1-5.
Compare and contrast conjugation, transduction, and transformation. Which processes, if any, involve homologous recombination and which, if any, do not?
What is the advantage of genetic recombination, which is depicted in part (b)?
