Textbook Problem

Assuming that the mechanism for the hydrogenation of C2H4 given in Section 11-7 is correct, would you predict that the product of the reaction of C2H4. with D2 would be CH2D—CH2D or CHD2—CH3? How could the reaction of C2H4 with D2 be used to confirm the mechanism for the hydrogenation of C2H4 given in Section 11-7?

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The product of the reaction of C2H4 with D2 is to be predicted and the confirmation of the mechanism for the hydrogenation of C2H4 given in the Section 11.7 is to be stated.

Concept introduction The compounds containing multiple C-C bonds are known as unsaturated compounds. For converting the unsaturated compounds into saturated compounds the process of hydrogenation is used.

To predict: The product of the reaction of C2H4 with D2 and the confirmation of the mechanism for the hydrogenation of C2H4 given in the Section 11.7 .

Explanation

Explanation

The addition of hydrogen to the unsaturated compounds in order to convert them into saturated compounds is called hydrogenation. This process is mainly used in industries to convert unsaturated fats into saturated fats. The addition reaction of hydrogen over the surface of unsaturated compound is quite difficult because C-C multiple bonds are very strong and has high amount of activation energy which is generally not present at normal reaction conditions.

A solid catalyst like Nickel, Palladium, or Platinum is used in the reaction which reduces the amount of activation energy by offering its surface for the adsorption of H2 and unsaturated compound. The reaction of hydrogenation is,
