Answer to Problem 102A

  0.63°

Explanation of Solution

Given:

The angle of incidence at the flint glass, θ1=45°

The glass’s index of refraction for red light, n2r=1.7273

The glass’s index of refraction for blue light, n2b=1.7708

Formula used:

Snell’s law of refraction,

  n1sinθ1=n2sinθ2

Where,

  n1= index of refraction of first mediumn2= index of refraction of second mediumθ1= angle of incidenceθ2= angle of refraction

Calculation:

It is known that,

Index of refraction of air, n1=1.00

Then, using Snell’s law of refraction, angle of refraction for red light will be,

  n1sinθ1=n2rsinθ2r(1.00)sin45°=(1.7273)sinθ2rθ2r=sin1(0.409)=24.14°

Similarly, angle of refraction for blue light will be,

  n1sinθ1=n2bsinθ2b(1.00)sin45°=(1.7708)sinθ2bθ2b=sin1(0.399)=23.51°

Then, the difference in refracted angles of red and blue light will be,

  θ=θ2rθ2b=24.14°23.51°=0.63°

Conclusion:

Hence, the difference in refracted angles of red and blue light is 0.63° .
