Horner–Wadsworth–Emmons reaction: It is variation of Wittig reaction where an aldehyde or a ketone gets converted to an alkene by replacing carbonyl group by a C=C bond. Here, instead of Wittig reagent, phosphonate ester carbanion reagent (HWE reagent) is used for this conversion. The major product formed will be an (E)–alkene.
