The thickness of the retina changes during certain eye diseases. One way to measure retinal thickness is to shine a low-energy laser at the retina and record the reflections on film. Because of the optical properties of the eye, the reflections from the front surface of the retina and the back surface of the retina will appear as two lines on the film separated by a distance. The distance between the lines on the film is proportional to the thickness of the retina. Below are data taken from the scanned film. Fit two Gaussian-shaped curves of arbitrary height and location to these data and determine the distance between the centers of the two peaks. A Gaussian curve has the form
wherek and a are constants that relate to the peak height and the center of the peak, respectively.

You are standing up while fishing on the other bank. After reflection from the surface of the water, part of the light from the bulb at the top of the pole reaches your eyes. Use a ray diagram to help find a point on the surface of the water from where the reflected ray reaches your eyes. Determine an expression for the distance from this point on the water to the bottom of the light pole if the height of the pole is H, your height is h, and the distance between you and the light pole is /.arrow_forwardTo measure the density of a stone, a digital scale and a beaker cup filled with water are used. The balance is used to measure the mass of the stone, while the beaker is used to measure the volume of the stone. It is known that the digital balance has a resolution of 0.1 g and that the beaker cup has a resolution of 5 ml. Repeated mass measurements return the following values: 250.0 g; 249.9 g; 250.3 g; 249.6g; 250.1 g; 249.7g; 250.4 g; 250.0 g; 248.8 g; 250.2 g The volume is measured only once. Placing the stone in the beaker, a volume of displaced water equal to 50 ml is measured. Using a k=2.5, check if the density of the stone is compatible or out of line with the value ρ = (4910 ± 65) kg.m-3 (a) none of the above (b) the values are compatible (c) missing data to perform the compatibility test (d) the values are discrepantarrow_forward
- The diagram below illustrates a simplified version of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's 25-ft space simulator chamber. Within it, tests are run for deep space probes and their components. In this particular experiment, a sensor assembly with its housing is placed inside. The sensor-housing electronics create heat such that q=3181.0 W exits the assembly's top surface into the chamber. The chamber itself is under vacuum, and its walls are at cryogenic temperatures to simulate conditions in space. Surfaces 1 and 2 are flat. Assume they are flush. The top surface of the chamber, Surface 4, can be approximated as a perfectly insulated, flat ceiling. The exposed surface of the floor, Surface 2, is a black, donut- shaped surface. Additional surface information can be seen below, including various parameters and dimensions. Assume all surfaces are opaque and diffuse, and conditions are at steady-state. PARAMETERS & DIMENSIONS Surface 1: A = 7.07 m²; diameter d; = 3 m; &₁ = 0.5; Surface 2: A₂ =…arrow_forwardShown in the image is a vertical section of a 66 block grid of a gold mine deposit. Each block is identified with a number and a gold (Au) grade in g/t. As shown, most blocks contain non- valuable or zero ore-grade (G=0). However, the ore-grade of highlighted block #17 is G2= 1.4 g/t, and similarly the ore grades of blocks #28, #39, #50 and #61 are in turn: G3 = 1.2, G4 = 2.3, G5 = 2.8, and G6 = 2.9 g/t. Evaluate the mining methods (o/c or u/g) which should be selected based on economic considerations only.arrow_forwardA theodolite is an instrument that measures horizontal and vertical angular orientations of a line of sight. The line of sight may be established optically, or by laser, and many forms of theodolite are used in surveying, construction, astronomy, and manufacturing. A simple optical theodolite is shown. After the instrument is aligned so that its base is in a horizontal plane and a desired reference direction is selected (such as perhaps north in the case of a surveying instrument), the telescopic sight is used to establish a line of sight, and then horizontal and vertical angles Thetah and Thetav are measured. If Thetah = 30° and and Thetav = 60°, determine the following: 7.1 The coordinate direction angle Alpha of the line of sight is Blank 1°. 7.2 The coordinate direction angle Beta of the line of sight is Blank 2°. 7.3 The coordinate direction angle Gamma of the line of sight is Blank 3°.arrow_forward
