Researchers investigated the possible beneficial effect on heart health of drinking black tea and whether adding milk to the tea reduces any possible benefit. Twenty-four volunteers were randomly assigned to one of three groups. Every day for a month, participants in group 1 drank two cups of hot black tea without milk, participants in group 2 drank two cups of hot black tea with milk, and participants in group 3 drank two cups of hot water but no tea. At the end of the month, the researchers measured the change in each of the participants’ heart health.
Did the researchers conduct an experiment or an observational study? Explain.
Why did the researchers include a group who drank hot water but no tea?
Is it reasonable to generalize the results of the study beyond the 24 participants? Explain why or why not.
What is the step-step solution to this problem?
Does posting calorie content for menu items affect people’s choices in fast-food restaurants? According to results obtained by Elbel, Gyamfi, and Kersh (2011), the answer is no. The researchers monitored the calorie content of food purchases for children and adolescents in four large fast-food chains before and after mandatory labeling began in New York City. Although most of the adolescents reported noticing the calorie labels, apparently the labels had no effect on their choices. Data similar to the results obtained show an average of M = 786 calories per meal with s = 85 for n = 100 children and adolescents before the labeling, compared to an average of M = 772 calories with s = 91 for a similar sample of n = 100 after the mandatory posting.
Use a two-tailed test with a α .05 to determine whether the mean number of calories after the posting is significantly different than before calorie content was posted.

In a classic study, Shrauger (1972) examined the effect of an audience on performance for two groups of participants: high self-esteem and low self-esteem individuals. The participants in the study were given a problem-solving task with half of the individuals in each group working alone and a half working with an audience. Performance on the problem-solving task was measured for each individual. The results showed that the presence of an audience had little effect on high self-esteem participants but significantly lowered the performance for the low self-esteem participants.
a. How many factors does this study have? What are they? b. Describe this study using the notation system that indicates factors and numbers of levels of each factor.

- If a newborn lab rat receives a hormone and its weight (in ounces) is converted into a z score that is greater than +2.00, what would the researcher most likely conclude about whether or not the hormone had an effect on the rat's weight?arrow_forwardThe director of an obesity clinic in a large northwestern city believes that drinking soft drinks contribute to obesity in children. To determine whether a relationship exists between these two variables, she conducts the following pilot study. Eight- 12-year-old male volunteers are randomly selected from children attending a local junior high school. Parents of the children are asked to monitor the number of soft drinks consumed by their child over a one week period. The children are weighed at the end of the week and their weights converted into body mass index (BMI) values. The BMI is a common index used to measure obesity and takes into account both height and weight. An individual is considered obese if they have a BMI value 30. - To examine adolescent substance abuse, Li, Pentz, and Chou (2002) surveyed 1,807 middle school students from 57 schools. The results showed that a greater risk of adolescent substance abuse was associated with increasing numbers of parents and friends who were sub- stance abusers. However, friends’ use did not affect adolescent substance abuse when parents were nonusers. Blood samples from wild, free-ranging deer were obtained via the jugular vein immediately after an intramuscular injection of succinylcholine using darts and a capture gun. Deer were bled again approximately 30 minutes after the injection and then released. The level of androgens at time of capture and 30 minutes later, measured in nanograms per milliliter (ng/ml), for 15 deers as in Table Q1. Assuming that the populations of androgen at time of injection and 30 minutes later are normally distributed:i) Find the average and standard deviation of this studyii)Determine the critical region of this problem.iii) Test at the 0.05 level of significance whether the androgen concentrations are altered after 30 minutes of restraint.arrow_forwardWhich of the independent variables retains the strongest association with the number of children a respondent has when all other variables in the model are controlled?arrow_forward
- In a study attempting to replicate findings by Stephens, Atkins, & Kingston (2009), each participant was asked to plunge a hand into the icy water and keep it there as long as the pain would allow. In one condition, the participants repeated their favorite curse words while their hands were in the water. In the other condition, they repeated neutral words. The original research showed that, in addition to lowering the participants’ perception of pain, swearing also increased the amount of time they were able to tolerate the pain. - In a study reported in the July 2007 issue of the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, researchers investigated whether veterans are more likely to commit suicide than nonveterans. They spent 12 years following 104,000 veterans who had served in the armed forces between 1917 and 1994, and compared them with 216,000 nonveterans. They found that 197 veterans and 311 nonveterans committed suicide. Q: How many times more times is a veteran likely to commit suicide than a nonveteran? Round all values to 3 decimal places. However, few studies look at the role caffeine plays in sedentary females.Researchers at the University of Western Australia conducted a test in which they determined therate of energy expenditure (kilojoules) on 10 healthy, sedentary females who were nonregularcaffeine users. Each female was randomly assigned either a placebo or caffeine pill (6mg/kg) 60minutes prior to exercise. The subject rode an exercise bike for 15 minutes at 65% of theirmaximum heart rate, and the energy expenditure was measured. The process was repeated on aseparate day for the remaining treatment. The mean difference in energy expenditure (caffeine –placebo) was 18kJ with a standard deviation of 19kJ.
