The ε4 allele of the gene encoding apolipoprotein E (APOE) is strongly associated with Alzheimer’s disease, but its value in making the diagnosis remains uncertain. A study was conducted among 2188 patients who were evaluated at autopsy for Alzheimer’s disease by previously established pathological criteria [16]. Patients were also evaluated clinically for the presence of Alzheimer’s disease. The data in Table 3.15 were presented.
Suppose the pathological diagnosis is considered the gold standard for Alzheimer’s disease.
To possibly improve on the diagnostic accuracy of the clinical diagnosis for Alzheimer’s disease, information on both the APOE genotype as well as the clinical diagnosis were considered. The data are presented in Table 3.16.
Suppose we consider the combination of both a clinical diagnosis for Alzheimer’s disease and the presence of ≥ 1 ε4 allele as a screening test for Alzheimer’s disease.

- 4) A medical researcher is interested in determining if there is a relationship between adults over 50 who exercise regularly and low, moderate, and high blood pressure. A random sample of 236 adults over 50 is selected and the results are given below. Test the claim that regular exercise and low, moderate, and high blood pressure are independent. Use alpha= 0.01 Blood pressure: Reg exercise: low 35, moderate 62, high 25 No reg. - A physiologist has conducted an experiment to evaluate the effect of hormone X on sexual behavior. Ten rats were injected with hormone X and 10 other rats received a placebo injection. The number of matings was counted over a 20-minute period. The results are shown in the table below. Each subject participated in a two-phase experimental session. In the first phase, respiration was measured while the subject was awake and at rest. In the second phase, the subject was told to imagine that he was performing muscular work, and respiration was measured again. For subjects in the treatment group, hypnosis was induced between the first and second phases; thus, the suggestion to imagine muscular work was “hypnotic suggestion” for treatment subjects and “waking suggestion” for control subjects. The table below shows the measurements of total ventilation (liters of air per minute per square meter of body area) for all 16 subjects. In the article “Food Allergy Advice May Be Peanuts” (Science News, Vol. 174, No. 12, pp. 8–9), N. Seppa reports that early exposure to peanuts seems to lessen the risk of nut allergy. Of 4000 Jewish children sampled in Britain, 1.85% had peanut allergies; and of 4600 Jewish children sampled in Israel, where early peanut consumption is more common, 0.17% had peanut allergies. The researcher chose Jewish children in both countries to limit genetic differences between groups. a. Is this study descriptive or inferential? b. - Question Red Wine and Weight LossResveratrol, a compound in grapes and red wine, has been shown to promote weight loss in rodents and now in a primate.1 Lemurs fed a resveratrol supplement for four weeks had decreased food intake, increased metabolic rate, and a reduction in seasonal body-mass gain compared to a control group. Suppose a hypothetical study is done for a different primate species, with one group given a resveratrol supplement and the other group given a placebo. We wish to see if there is evidence that resveratrol increases the mean metabolism rate for this species. (This exercise presents hypothetical data. We will see the results from the actual study later in this chapter.) (a) State the null and alternative hypotheses.Let group 1 be the species taking a resveratrol supplement and let group 2 be the species taking a placebo.arrow_forwardResearchers are interested in the effectiveness of a new anti-retroviral medication at increasing 5 year survival for HIV infected persons with Hepatitis C. The purpose of the study was to determine if MRI exams do a better job than mammograms of determining if women who have recently been diagnosed with cancer in one breast have cancer in the other breast. The study participants were 940 women who had been diagnosed with cancer in one breast and for whom a mammogram did not detect cancer in the other breast. These women had an MRI exam of the other breast, and 111 of those exams indicated possible cancer. After undergoing biopsies, it was determined that 30 of the 111 did in fact have cancer in the other breast, whereas 81 did not. The women were all followed for one year, and four of the women for whom the MRI exam did not indicate cancer in the other breast were subsequently diagnosed with cancer that the MRI did not detect. The accompanying table summarizes this information. CancerPresent Cancer NotPresent Total MRI…arrow_forward
