Concept Introduction:

When ice melts, the rigid solid becomes a mobile liquid that takes the shape of its container. When heating continues, the liquid starts to boil and water becomes a gas or vapor. In ice, the water molecules are locked into a fixed position, but have small vibrations. In the liquid the molecules are no longer fixed as they were in ice. In gaseous state, the molecules are much farther apart and move randomly. Although the physical state of water is changed when heating, H2 O molecules are still present.
