Chapter 9, Problem 24RQ
Summary Introduction
To review:
The reason why animals cannot generate a glucose molecule from compounds with two carbons like ethanol or acetate.
Introduction:
Acetate is a two-carbon anion derived from acetic acid. The formation of acetyl-Coenzyme A (CoA) is a one-step process that requires the enzyme acetyl CoA synthetase and ATP (adenosine triphosphate). Formation of acetyl CoA from ethanol is a three-step process, in which ethanol is first converted to acetaldehyde, then acetate, and finally acetyl CoA.
