Textbook Problem

Describe the process by which crude petroleum is separated into simpler mixtures (fractions).

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The process by which the crude petroleum is separated into simpler mixtures or fractions has to be explained.

Explanation

Natural gas and crude oil constitutes mainly of alkanes and cycloalkanes.  These are found in the underground associated with dome-shaped rock formation.  It is recovered from the rock formation by drilling a hole.

Petroleum (crude oil) is a complex mixture of both cyclic and acyclic hydrocarbons.  This mixture can be separated into the respective fractions by refining.  Physical separation of these components is done by fractional distillation.  The boiling point difference between the components is used as the principle in fractional distillation.  This is because the boiling point of each and every hydrocarbon is different.

When steam is passed through, the crude oil gets converted into vapors and it gets condensed back into liquid...
