A study on the oxygen consumption rate (OCR) of sea cucumbers involved a random sample of size 12 at 15oC and a second random sample of size 5 kept at 18oC. To test the hypothesis that this range of temperature had no effect on the OCR, what is the degrees of freedom for a two-sample t-test?
In its January 25, 2012, issue, the Journal of the American Medical Association reported on the effects of overconsumption of low, normal, and high protein diets on weight gain, energy expenditure, and body composition. Researchers conducted a single blind, randomized controlled trial of 25 U.S. adults. The subjects were healthy, weight-stable, male and female volunteers, aged 18 to 35 years. All subjects consumed a weight-stabilizing diet for 13 to 25 days. Afterwards, the researchers randomly assigned participants to diets containing various percentages of energy from protein: 5% (low protein), 15% (normal protein), or 25% (high protein). The subjects were not aware of the specific protein level diet to which they were assigned. On these diets the researchers overfed the participants during the last 8 weeks of their 10 to 12 week stay in the inpatient metabolic unit. The goal was to investigate the effect of overconsumption of protein on weight gain, energy expenditure, and body…

Wang, et al., Lancet, 2005:556–562) presents the results of a study of the effectiveness of giving blood plasma containing complement component C4A to pediatric cardiopulmonary bypass patients. Of 58 patients receiving C4A-rich plasma, the average length of hospital stay was 8.5 days and the standard deviation was 1.9 days. Of 58 patients receiving C4A-free plasma, the average length of hospital stay was 11.9 days and the standard deviation was 3.6 days. Can you conclude that the mean hospital stay is shorter for patients receiving C4A-rich plasma?arrow_forwardHigh levels of blood sugar are associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. Grau-Perez, C. Kuo, et al.,Environmental Health Perspectives, 2017, online) reports a study in which 47 of 155 peoplewith impaired fasting glucose had type 2 diabetes. Consider this to be a simple randomsample. a) Find a 95% confidence interval for the proportion of people with impaired fasting glucose who have type 2 diabetes. b) Find a 99% confidence interval for the proportion of people with impaired fasting glucose who have type 2 diabetes. c) A doctor claims that less than 35% of people with impaired fasting glucose have type 2 diabetes. In particular, the researchers were interested in the relationship between p1, the proportion of Alpha Airlines flights that were delayed at least 15 minutes, and p2, the proportion of Beta Airlines flights that were delayed at least 15 minutes. A random sample of 1,000 Alpha flights and a separate random sample of 1,000 Beta flights found that 67 of the Alpha fights and 160 of the Beta flights were delayed at least 15 minutes. The conditions for inference were checked and verified. Does this set of samples provide strong evidence that Alpha Airlines has a smaller proportion of flights that are delayed at least 15 minutes than Beta Airlines, at the α = 0.05 significance level? What is the F critical value at the 2.5% significance levelarrow_forwardCadmium, a heavy metal, is toxic to animals. Mushrooms, however, are able to absorb and accumulate cadmium at high concentrations. The Czech and Slovak governments have set a safety limit for cadmium in dry vegetables at 0.5 part per million (ppm). M. Melgar et al. measured the cadmium levels in a random sample of the edible mushroom Boletus pinicola and published the results in the paper “Influence of Some Factors in Toxicity and Accumulation of Cd from Edible Wild Macrofungi in NW Spain” (Journal of Environmental Science and Health, Vol. B33(4), pp. 439–455). A hypothesis test is to be performed to decide whether the mean cadmium level in Boletus pinicola mushrooms is greater than the government’s recommended limit. Hypothesis tests are proposed. For each hypothesis test,a. determine the null hypothesis.b. determine the alternative hypothesis.c. classify the hypothesis test as two tailed, left tailed, or right tailed.arrow_forwardThe following results are from an independent-measures, two-factor study with n=5 participants in each treatment condition.
