Concept introduction: Salts are neutral in nature and are formed in the neutralization reaction. Based upon their properties salts behave as a weak base or a weak acid in solutions. pH   of basic salts is calculated by ICE(Initial Concentration Equilibrium ) table and Kb values. pH Of acidic salts is calculated by ICE table and Ka values.

Acids and bases when reacts with each other, take part in a neutralization reaction forming a neutral solution called salt. The pH value of a pure salt is 7.0.

Anions of strong acids are not basic such as Cl,NO3, and Br while anions of weak acids such as CH3COO,F and CN   behaves as weak bases. Cations of strong bases like that of alkaline metals are not acidic at all while cations of weak bases are weak acidic like NH4+,CH3NH3+, . and C2H5NH3+   The compounds behaving as weak bases in water are KCN,NaF and CH3COONa .

In order to find the value of pH for salts of weak bases firstly figure out all the major species contributing towards the pH value then using ICE (Initial Change Equilibrium) table concentration of all the reactants and products are calculated. Then value of Kb is calculated by the formula.

Kb=KwKa

Where,

• Kw is auto-ionization equilibrium constant for water.
• Ka is acid dissociation constant.

Now using ICE table values and Kb values, equation is solved for the value of [OH] The value of [H+] is calculated by the formula.

[H+][OH]=1.0×1014

By substituting the value of [OH] in the above expression, value of [H+] is calculated
