Chapter 5, Problem 17P
Summary Introduction

To analyze:

The expected frequency for given gametes (a to d) by referring to a table.

Dihybrid genotype Recombination frequency Gamete genotype
DE/de 8% De
AD/ad 28% ad
DEF/def E – F 24% D – E 8% dEf
BdE/bDe B - D 18% D – E 8% Bde

Introduction:

Recombination frequency is a measure of genetic linkage. It is used in creating a genetic linkage map. Recombination frequency (r) can be defined as the rate of occurrence of recombination between a pair of linked gene.

It can be calculated using this formula –

r = Total number of recombinant

       Total number of progeny

According to the given problem, 1 map unit corresponds to 1% recombination.

Frequency of specific gamete formation can be calculated from the map of linked genes.

An individual is heterozygous for a reciprocal translocation, with the following chromosomes: A • B C D E F A • B C V W X R ST • U D E F R ST • U V W X Q. Explain why the fertility of this individual is likely to be less than the fertility of an individual without a translocation.
An individual has the following reciprocal translocation:What would be the outcome of alternate segregation and of adjacent-1segregation?
Consider two loci A and B that are 30 cM apart on chromosome 1 in the fruit fly. A paracentric inversion is found to span about half of the distance between these loci, but not include either A or B. What is the approximate recombination frequency expected for these loci in … flies that are heterozygous for this inversion?  RF(A-B) for heterozygous flies is … flies that are homozygous for this inversion?  RF(A-B) for homozygous flies is …
