Chapter 5, Problem 1P
Summary Introduction
Interpretation:To name one potential determinant of the varying capacity
Concept Introduction:
Design Capacity − Design Capacity of a facility is the maximum output of the facility under ideal conditions. There is no delay or stoppages in the process and everything run smoothly.
Effective Capacity − Effective capacity of the facility is actual capacity at which the facility is running or is expected to run. It is always less than the Design Capacity. This is so because of the many factors that delays the process or stops the smooth functioning of the facility

A manufacturer of ballet shoes has determined that its production facility has a design capacity of 300 shoes per week. Theeffective capacity, however, is 230 shoes per week. What is themanufacturer’s capacity utilization relative to both design andeffective capacity if output is 200 shoes per week?
In the bakery, we have established that design capacity is 30 pies per day and effective capacity is 20 pies per day. Currently, the bakery is producing 27 pies per day. What is the bakery’s capacity utilization relative to effective capacity?
Thomas Pang Furniture produced 70,000 Executive chairs per week. The effective capacity is 71,000 chairs. The production line operates 5 days per week with two 6-hour shifts per day. The line was designed to process the Executive chairs at the rate of 1,200 per hour. Determine the design capacity, utilization and efficiency for this plant when producing the Executive chair.
Thomas Pang Furniture now needs to increase production of the Executive chairs. A second production line will be added. Effective capacity on this second line is the same as the first line at 71,000 Executive chairs. The first line is operating at a higher efficiency but output on the second line will be no more than 75% because the crew will be primarily new hires. Determine the expected output of this second line.

- A company has a factory that is designed so that it is most efi cient (average unit cost is minimized) when producing 15,000 units of output each month. However, it has an absolute maximum output capability of 17,250 units per month, and can produce as little as 7,000 units per month without corporate headquarters shifting production to another plant. - Tonya Stephani is the front office manager/RM at the 200-room Hilton Garden hotel. Tonight, she has 100 stay-over rooms and 100 arrivals. Based on her own forecasts, she anticipates 10 no-shows tonight. The average rate to be paid by each arriving guest is $199.99. Tonya has a signed agreement with the local Sheraton hotel that states each property is willing (subject to blackout dates) to accept the other’s walks at the rate of $99.00 per night. Tonight, the Sheraton has available rooms and has agreed to take up to ten walked guests. The cost of transporting guests to the Sheraton and back, as well as other walk related costs incurred by the Hilton, average $15.00 per room. Assume Tonya decides to overbook by ten rooms. Excluding any potential no-show billings, how much extra room revenue will be gained from overbooking if Tonya indeed experiences ten no-shows but overbooks by ten rooms and thus achieves a 100 percent occupancy? How much extra cost will the hotel incur if it sells…arrow_forwardThe Avis Company is a car rental company and is located three miles from the Los Angeles airport (LAX). The branch manager wants to improve the service and suggests dispatching buses every 0.5 minute. She argues that this will reduce the average traveling time (a round trip) to Avis’s offices to 2.5 minutes. Is she correct?
