Chapter 5, Problem 5P
In mice, the dominant allele Gs of the X-linked gene Greasy produces shiny fur, while the recessive wild-type Gs+ allele determines normal fur. The dominant allele Bhd of the X-linked Broadhead gene causes skeletal abnormalities including broad heads and snouts, while the recessive wild-type Bhd+ allele yields normal skeletons. Female mice heterozygous for the two alleles of both genes were mated with wild-type males. Among 100 male progeny of this cross, 49 had shiny fur, 48 had skeletal abnormalities, 2 had shiny fur and skeletal abnormalities, and 1 was wild type.
a. | Diagram the cross described and calculate the distance between the two genes. |
b. | What would have been the results if you had counted 100 female progeny of the cross? |

Males only have either long or short antennae. You cross a female with long antennae with a male with short antennae. What proportion of their male offspring do you expect to have short antennae? - Anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia is an X-linked recessive disorder in humans characterized by small teeth, no sweat glands, and sparse body hair. This trait is usually seen in men, but women who are heterozygous carriers of the trait often have irregular patches of skin with few or no sweat glands (see the illustration below). Q. Explain why women who are heterozygous carriers of a recessive gene for anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia have irregular patches of skin lacking sweat glands.arrow_forwardMouse fur color is affected by TWO unlinked loci. GG or Gg mice are agouti. Mice with genotype gg are albino since all pigment production is blocked, regardless of the phenotype at the second locus. At the other locus, the F allele (agouti coat) is dominant to the f allele (black coat). How many black mice would result from a cross between two agouti mice of genotype GgFf? (just write in the numeral)arrow_forwardIn Drosophila melanogaster, forked bristles are caused by an allele (Xf) that is X linked and recessive to an allele for normal bristles (X+). Brown eyes are caused by an allele (b) that is autosomal and recessive to an allele for red eyes (b +). A female fly that is homozygous for normal bristles and red eyes mates with a male fly that has forked bristles and brown eyes. The F1 are intercrossed to produce the F2.
