Chapter 7, Problem 15P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The number of double bonds present in fullerene should be determined along with one way of placing them in structure which is shown in figure 7.17a.

Concept Introduction:

Octet rule:

The atoms of low atomic number combine or elements form bond in such a manner that each atom contains eight electrons in outermost shell or valence shell and their electronic configuration will be same as a noble gas.

Fullerene molecular formula: C60

Fullerene has 60 carbon atoms and its structure is arranged in a closed net having 12 pentagonal and 12 hexagonal faces to form cage like structure.

Students have asked these similar questions
To satisfy the octet rule, fullerenes must have doublebonds. How many? Give a simple rule for one way ofplacing them in the structure shown in Figure 7.17a.
For the four classes of hydrocarbons (Alkane, Alkene, Alkyne, Arene): Give a structural formula example of each, or identify the characteristic bond that is present.
The terms configuration and conformation appear in descriptions of molecular structure. How do they differ?
