Interpretation:

The relationship between atom and element must be explained.

Concept introduction:

Atom is composed of fundamental (sub-atomic) particles like electrons, protons and neutrons. Element is the pure substance which is composed of atoms.

Answer to Problem 1E

Atom makes element. For example atoms of oxygen make element oxygen.

Explanation of Solution

If a pure substance (element) is analyzed then atoms will be obtained. A small piece of element may contain huge number of atoms. For example 23 g sodium element contains Avogadro’s number ( $6.023\times {10}^{23}$ ) number of sodium atoms.

Conclusion

Atom is microscopic and element is macroscopic. Element is bulk amount which is composed of atoms.
