Chapter U1.4, Problem 2E
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Two objects with equal volume will have same mass or not is to be explained.

Concept introduction:

Matter is defined as anything that has mass and volume. Chemists use the word matter to describe all materials and objects in the world such as air, book, chair, ink etc. Matter can be anything that has substance and takes up space. Matter may be solid, liquid or gas.

Answer to Problem 2E

Two objects with equal volume will not have same mass.

Explanation of Solution

Two objects with equal volume that are not made from the same material will not have same mass. If they weighed on a weighing machine, their masses will be different.

For example masses of 1cm3 of iron and 1cm3 of wood are different. Iron being a heavy metal will weigh more whereas wood is lighter than iron so it will weigh less. Even if two wooden objects of same volume are taken but if they are made of wood from different trees, they will show variations in their masses. For example an object made of oak tree wood will show more mass than an object made from pine wood even if their volume is same. This is because oak wood is slightly heavier than pine wood.

Therefore two objects with equal volume will not have same mass if they are made of different material.

Conclusion

Two objects with equal volume will not have same massas the materials of the objects are different. The one which is made of lighter material will have less mass and the one made of heavier material will have more mass. Although the volume of both objects is equal their masses will be different.
