Whether the any of two that is solid sodium chloride and aqueous sodium chloride can be used for the flame test or not needs to be determined.

Concept introduction:

In flame test different salts are converted to volatile chloride salt after dipping in HCl prior to hold in burner flame.

Answer to Problem 8E

It doesn’t matter whether a flame test is done with solid sodium chloride or aqueous solution of sodium chloride.

Explanation of Solution

When sodium chloride is used for flame test, the heat energy of the flame helps in the removal of the valence electron from sodium atom which imparts golden yellow flame color due to electron moving back to the ground state.

So, when solid sodium chloride or aqueous solution of sodium chloride is used, in both the cases there will be same flame coloration. This is because in both the cases, sodium is present.

Conclusion

Flame test with solid sodium chloride and aqueous solution of sodium chloride is same.
