Chapter U1.4, Problem 3E
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The possibility of prediction of volume of an object by just looking it needs to be predicted.

Concept introduction:

Chemistry deals with the different processes which occur in surrounding and directly or indirectly related to each other. Physical properties can be used to explain physical nature of any substance.

Different physical properties of matter are used to explain the nature of matter and its interaction with other substances. For example; volume of a substance represents the amount of space a substance takes up.

Answer to Problem 3E

The volume of an object can be just predicted by looking but it is not possible for all the objects. For example, the volume of objects with irregular shape and size cannot be predicted by looking at them.

Explanation of Solution

All the properties of matter can be explained with the help of different physical properties such as mass, volume, density, melting point, boiling point etc.

The volume of an object can be just predicted by looking but it is not possible for the objects with irregular shape and size.

The volume of an object with regular shape and size can be predicted by looking at them and can be further calculated with the help of mass and density.

Density = mass volume

For example; volume of objects with irregular shape like stone cannot be determined just by looking it but the volume of a cube can be predicted due to its fixed size and shape.

Conclusion

The volume of an object can be just predicted by looking but it is not possible for the objects with irregular shape and size.
