Elements belonging to same group in periodic table have same outermost electronic configuration.

Explanation of Solution

If the valence shell electronic configuration is same then those elements are in the same group of the periodic table.

The chemical properties are controlled by valence shell electrons as these electrons participate in chemical reactions. Thus, same group elements show similar physical and chemical properties.

If group number of any element is known then the number of electrons in its valence electrons can be determined.

Conclusion

Elements in same group of periodic table have similar valence shell electronic configuration.
