Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The relation between the pH and that of an acid or base concentration must be explained.
Concept introduction:
The pH and pOH for a solution are calculated from following equations:
Answer to Problem 1TAI
The pH is inversely proportional to the concentration of hydrogen ion concentration in the solution or acid concentration.
The pH is directly proportional to the concentration of base solutions or hydroxide ion concentration.
Explanation of Solution
With the increase of concentration of acid solution, value of [H+] increases. As pH is related with H+ as negative logarithm so, pH will decrease.
On the other hand, with the increase in concentration of base, value of [OH-] increases. So, pH decreases. Eventually pH increases because pH+pOH is constant.
