Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The ionic solids which are soluble in water needs to be determined.
Concept Introduction:
The substance which dissolves in water is known as solubility.
Answer to Problem 4E
LiNO3 = soluble
KCl = soluble
MgCl2 = soluble
Ca(OH)2 = insoluble
RbOH = soluble
CaCO3 = insoluble
Li2CO3 = soluble
PbCl2 = insoluble
AgCl = insoluble
Explanation of Solution
All the alkali metals and nitrates are soluble in water. Therefore, LiNO3 is soluble in water.
KCl is a salt which is completely dissociates into ions when dissolve in water i.e. K+ and Cl-. Therefore, KCl is soluble in water.
MgCl2 is an inorganic salt which is completely dissociates into ions when dissolve in water i.e. Mg2+ and 2Cl-. Therefore; MgCl2 is soluble in water.
Ca(OH)2is insoluble in water. As the concentration of calcium and hydroxide is high it will form white precipitate of calcium hydroxide.
All the alkali metals are soluble in water. Therefore, RbOH is soluble in water.
Calcium carbonate is strong and it is solid. CaCO3 is insoluble in water due to high lattice energy, water molecule do not solvate the ions. Therefore, the ions separate and come out into the solution.
All the alkali metals are soluble in water. Therefore, Li2CO3 is soluble in water.
Due to high lattice energy and charge density, PbCl2 is insoluble in water.
Due to covalent character of AgCl, it is not completely dissociates into ions when dissolved in water. Therefore, the AgCl is insoluble in water.
Thus,
LiNO3 = soluble
KCl = soluble
MgCl2 = soluble
Ca(OH)2 = insoluble
RbOH = soluble
CaCO3 = insoluble
Li2CO3 = soluble
PbCl2 = insoluble
AgCl = insoluble
