Chapter 14, Problem 14.4P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Why each terminal carbon in the allyl anion (CH2 = CH - CH2-) bears the same negative partial charge is to be explained using its MO picture.

Concept introduction:

The overlap of the two atomic orbitals (AOs) results in the formation of two molecular orbitals (MOs), one of which is lower in energy than the original AOs, and the other higher in energy than the original AOs. The two are called bonding MO and antibonding MO respectively. The two electrons will occupy the lower energy MO resulting in a π bond. For a linear system of conjugated p orbitals, all nodal planes in the resulting π MO must be positioned symmetrically about the center of that set of p orbitals.

A proton transfer reaction can occur when an aldehyde is placed in strong base, such as an alkoxide ion, producing an alcohol and a charged conjugate base that is resonance stabilized. In the left box, draw the curved arrows for the proton transfer. In the middle and right boxes, draw the two structures for the resonance-stabilized product as noted in the box-specific directions. Be sure to include all lone pairs and nonzero formal charges.
give an energy diagram for the cyclopropenyl MOs. (The polygon rule is helpful.)Label each MO as bonding, nonbonding, or antibonding, and add the nonbonding line.Notice that it goes through the approximate average of the MOs.(c) Add electrons to your energy diagram to show the configuration of the cyclopropenylcation and the cyclopropenyl anion. Which is aromatic and which is antiaromatic?
