The fragmentation mechanisms for the observation of strong peak at
Concept introduction:
The EI mass spectrum is one of the types of mass spectrum in which an organic compound is vaporized and is analyzed by the bombardment with high energy electrons. When high energy passes by the molecule, it ejects an electron. The molecule results in the formation of the radical cation. This radical cation is then fragmented into small pieces. The rate of fragmentation depends upon the stability of the radical cation.

- The mass spectrum (a) and the infrared spectrum (b) of an unknown hydrocarbon are shown. Propose as many structures as you can.arrow_forward12. The mass spectrum of 2,2-dimethylpropane shows only a very weak molecular ion peak at m/z = 72. However, a large peak at m/z = 57 is seen. Suggest a possible structure of the fragment giving rise to this large peak and suggest a reason as to why this peak is so large. type answerarrow_forwardThe molecular ion region of the spectrum of biphenyl. M1 is observed at m/z 154 and the intensity of M 1 1 is 12.9% of M1. What formulas of the type CnHxOyNz are consistent with the spectrum?arrow_forward
- The base peak at m/z 56 in the mass spectrum of methylcyclopentane corresponds to loss of ethylene to give a radical cation with the molecular formula C4H8+.. Propose a structural formula for this radical cation and show how it might be formedarrow_forwardShow the fragmentation that accounts for the cation at m/z 57 in the mass spectrum of 2-methylpentane. Explain why this ion is less abundant than those at m/z 71 and 43.arrow_forward2-methyl hexane shows an intense peak in the mass spectrum at m/z=43. Propose a likely structure for this fragment and explainarrow_forward
- Following is the mass spectrum of 1-bromobutane. Q.) Account for the appearance of the M + 2 peak of approximately 95% of the intensity of the molecular ion peak.arrow_forwardDraw the structure of the compound shown in the mass spectra given its molecular formula C8H9NO. Show the fragmentation mechanisms of each important fragments. The M+ is 135, while the base peak is at 105 m/z.arrow_forwardThe mass spectrum of compound E with the molecular formula C8H7ClO is shown below. Draw the most likely ion fragment for the signals at m/z 111 and 139. Why do these signals at m/z 113, 141, and 156 appear as pairs with similar intensities at m/z 111, 139, and 154?arrow_forward
- A radical containing three inequivalent protons with hyperfine coupling constants 2.11 mT, 2.87 mT, and 2.89 mT gives a spectrum centred on 332.8 mT. At what fields do the hyperfine lines occur and what are their relative intensities?arrow_forwardThe mass spectrum of 2,3-dimethylpentane [(CH3)2CHCH(CH3)CH2CH3]shows fragments at m/z = 85 and 71.
