Chapter 20, Problem 20.6P
Interpretation Introduction

(a)

Interpretation:

On the basis of 13C NMR, the compounds α,αdimethylsuccinic acid and adipic acid are to be differentiated.

Concept introduction:

Carboxylic acid is a class of organic compound that contains a COOH group attached with a hydrocarbon chain. The name of these compounds ends with a suffix oicacid or icacid. The 13C NMR spectroscopy is similar kind of spectroscopy the only difference is that it is used to detect the presence of 13C nucleus. The natural abundance of 13C nucleus is only 1.1% while 12C nucleus is not detectable by NMR spectroscopy. The difference between its resonance frequency and that of the reference standard is known as the chemical shift of a nucleus. The (n+1) rule is applicable on the protons attached to the same carbon whose splitting pattern is to be determined.

Interpretation Introduction

(b)

Interpretation:

On the basis of proton NMR, the compounds α,αdimethylsuccinic acid and adipic acid are to be differentiated.

Concept introduction:

Carboxylic acid is a class of organic compound contains a COOH group attached with a hydrocarbon chain. The name of these compounds ends with a suffix oicacid or icacid. In proton NMR spectroscopy, every nucleus has a spin. There is an angular momentum related to the spin. The difference between its resonance frequency and that of the reference standard is known as the chemical shift of a nucleus. The (n+1) rule is applicable on the protons attached to the adjacent carbon whose splitting pattern is to be determined.
