The compound 2-bromobutane is a product of addition of HBr to three different alkenes. Identify the alkenes and write an equation for the reaction of HBr with one of the alkenes.

Interpretation: The three alkenes which undergoes the reaction with HBr to give 2-bromobutane have to be identified and an equation for the reaction of HBr with one of the alkene has to be given.

Concept introduction:

An alkene undergo addition reaction when it is treated with halogen acids like HBr. The addition takes place according to Markoni-Kov’s rule. According to which the addition of HX on asymmetrical alkenes occurs in such a way that proton adds to that carbon which already has more number of hydrogens and halogen atom adds to that carbon which has less number of hydrogen atoms.

Explanation

The given reaction is,

  

The addition of one bromine atoms takes place during reaction of given alkene and HBr and one hydrogen atom gives the product is2-bromobutane.

There is addition of bromine atoms takes place at C-2 which confirm the position of double bond. Therefore the double bond is can between C-2 and C-3 carbon atoms and may be between C-1 and C-2.

The number of carbon atoms in longest carbon chain will be four as the product has butane in its systematic name. So there are two possibilities which are given below.

  • The three alkenes which undergoes the reaction with HBr to give 2-bromobutane is identified

(1) The double bond is present between C-1 and C-2 carbon atoms of the linear chain
