Introduction:

Ionophores are lipophilic or hydrophobic molecules. These bind to the cations and transport them through a channel. In this process, they dissipate the electrochemical gradient setup across the membrane. Valinomycin is an antibiotic that is also an ionophore. Other examples of ionophores are oligomycin and nigericin.
