The number of protons and electrons in the given ion is to be determined.

Concept Introduction:

An atomic ion is the ion that consists of only one atom with a positive or negative charge. A positive ion is formed when an atom loses one or more electrons, and is known as a cation. A negative ion is formed when an atom gains one or more electrons, and is known as an anion. The ability of gaining or losing of electrons is based on the electronic structure of the atom.

Explanation of Solution

a) K+.

Potassium is an alkali metal in the periodic table The atomic number of potassium is 19. So, it has 19 protons in the nucleus. The number of protons and the number of electrons are equal in potassium atom.

The electronic configuration of potassium atom is  [Ar] 4s1, which shows that it has one electron in its outer most orbital and it has ability to lose one electron. Hence, potassium loses one electron to form a positively charged K+ ion, which means that K+ ion has one proton more than electrons.

Hence, K+ ion is derived from the potassium atom.

b) F

Fluorine is a non-metal in the periodic table The atomic number of potassium is 9. So, it has 9 protons in the nucleus. The number of protons and the number of electrons are equal in fluorine atom.

The electronic configuration of fluorine atom is [He] 2s2 2p5, which shows that it has seven electrons in its outermost orbital and it has ability to gain one electron. Hence, fluorine gains one electron to form a negatively charged F ion, which means that F ion has one proton less than electrons.

Hence, F ion is derived from the fluorine atom.

c) N3-

Nitrogen is also a non-metal in the periodic table The atomic number of nitrogen is 7
