The types of given alloys (brass and steel) have to be described.

Concept Introduction:

Alloy is a mixture of different metals and has metallic properties. A metal is combined with one or more metals to form an alloy.

There are two types of alloys-

1. Substitutional alloy
2. Interstitial alloy

1. Brass is an example of a substitutional alloy.
2. Steel is an example of an interstitial alloy.

Explanation of Solution

Brass is an example of a substitutional alloy. Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. In brass copper metals are replaced by zinc atoms.

Steel is an example of an interstitial alloy. Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon. As size of carbon is much smaller than iron. In steel the holes created between iron metals are occupied by smaller size carbon atoms.
