Chapter 14, Problem 5STP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The value of vapor pressure at 100C needs to be determined.

Concept introduction: Vapor pressure can be defined as pressure exerted by vapor in equilibrium with its liquid state.

Vapor pressure at room temperature ( 25C ) is 1.00 atm.

Expert Solution & Answer

Answer to Problem 5STP

Option “D” is correct.

Explanation of Solution

With increase of temperature kinetic energy of the molecules increases and hence more and more molecules escape the liquid state to vapor state. As the number of molecules in vapor state increases vapor pressure also increases. If at 25C vapor pressure is 1.00 atm then at 100C vapor pressure must be greater than 1.00 atm.

Conclusion

Option A and B cannot be correct because here vapor pressure is less than 1.00 atm at 100C .

Option C is also not correct because 1.00 atm is the vapor pressure at 25C .
