Interpretation:

The role of oxidation reactions in monitoring the blood glucose level of an individual with diabetes needs to be explained.

Concept Introduction:

The aldehyde carbonyl group of an aldose can be oxidized using a suitable oxidizing agent to a carboxyl group, producing a aldonic acid. Carbohydrates that can be oxidized are known as reducing sugars as it reduces the oxidizing agent. All aldoses are reducing sugars. Some ketoses are also reducing sugars. Carbonyl carbon of a ketone is near to a CH2OH group. So, ketones rearrange to form an aldose, which is eventually oxidized to aldonic acid.
