Interpretation:

The number of valence electrons in each of the given elementsis to be determined.

Concept Introduction:

As per Bohr’s model of an atom, electrons are arranged in orbits. Orbits are circular paths in which electrons revolve around the nucleus. There can be a maximum of two electrons in the first orbit, eight electrons each in the second and third orbits and eighteen electrons in the fourth orbit.

The arrangement of electrons in an orbit is termed as electronic configuration. The atoms in which the orbits are completely filled are the least chemically reactive while those in which the orbits are incomplete are reactive.

The electrons present in the last orbit of the electronic configuration of an atom are called valence electrons. If two elements have the same number of valence electrons, they will have similar properties.

Explanation of Solution

a) B

Boron is a chemical element that contains 5 electrons. Its electronic configuration is 2,3. It has three electrons in the last orbit. So, the number of valence electrons is three. Therefore, the number of valence electrons in boron is 3.

b) Si

Silicon is a chemical element that consists of 14 electrons. Its electronic configuration is 2,8,4. Si has four electrons in the last orbit. So, the number of valence electrons is four. Thus, the number of valance electrons in silicon is 4.

c) Ca

Calcium contains 20 electrons. Its electronic configuration is 2,8,8,2 and it has two electrons in the last orbit
