Ascorbic acid, or vitamin C (C6H8O6), is an essential vitamin. It cannot be stored by the body and must be present in the diet. What is the molar mass of ascorbic acid? Vitamin C tablets are taken as a dietary supplement. If a typical tablet contains 500.0 mg vitamin C, what amount (moles) and what number of molecules of vitamin C does it contain?

Molar mass of a substance is defined as the mass of the substance in gram of one mole of that compound.

The molar mass of any compound can be calculated by adding of atomic weight of individual atoms present in it.

The amount of substance containing 12g of pure carbon is called a mole. One mole of atoms always contains 6.022×1023 molecules. The number of molecules in one mole is also called Avogadro’s number.

To determine: The molar mass of ascorbic acid; the number of moles in 500.00mg of vitamin C; the number of molecules in 500.00mg of vitamin C (C6H8O6) .

To determine: The molar mass of ascorbic acid (C6H8O6) .

The atomic weight of carbon (C) is 12.01g/mol .

The atomic weight of oxygen (O) is 15.999g/mol .

The atomic weight of hydrogen (H) is 1.008g/mol .

In the compound C6H8O6 , six carbon, six oxygen and eight hydrogen atoms are present. Hence, molar mass of C6H8O6 is calculated as,

(6×12.01+8×1.008+6×15.999)g/mol=176.118g/mol_

To determine: The number of moles in 500.00mg of vitamin C (C6H8O6) .

Given

The mass of vitamin C is 500.00mg .

The molar mass of C6H8O6 is 176.118g/mol .

The conversion of milligram (mg) into gram (g) is done as,

1mg=103g

Hence, the conversion of 500.00mg into gram is,

500.00mg=(500.00×103)g=0.5g

Formula

The number of moles in C6H8O6 is calculated as,

MolesofC6H8O6=MassofC6H8O6MolarmassofC6H8O6

Substitute the values of mass and molar mass of C6H8O6 in above equation,

MolesofC6H8O6=MassofC6H8O6MolarmassofC6H8O6=0.5g176.118g/mol=2
