Organ Transplants Must Be Immunologically

In the near future, pig organs may be used for organ transplants. How are researchers attempting to prevent rejection of the pig organs by human recipients?

Summary Introduction

To explain: The way in which pig organs can be transplanted into the human recipient with minimum rejections.

Introduction: Each organism is different from another by the presence of specific MHC (major histocompatibility complex) on the cells. However, there is a 50% similarity in MHC between parents and children and 25% similarity is found between siblings.

Explanation of Solution

When an organ is transplanted between human beings and animals, it is called xenotransplant. In general, the immune system of the body recognizes the transplanted organ as a foreign substance and initiates an immune response against that. There are two types of responses that are primarily observed during the organ transplants. The first response is activation of the complement system and the second response includes the activation of T-cells.

To prevent the rejection of xenotransplants, it is important to counteract the complement-mediated rejection. Researchers have isolated genes that can block the complement proteins...
