The Complement System Kills Microorganisms

The complement system supplements the inflammatory response by directly killing microorganisms. Describe the life cycle of complement proteins, from their synthesis in the liver to their activity at the site of an infection.

Summary Introduction

To explain:  The complete life cycle of complement proteins from their synthesis to the site of action.

Introduction: Inflammatory response is the part of the non-specific immune response. The non-specific immune response is the first line of defense of the body. It generates an immune response against all type of foreign substance. The complement system is part of the innate immune response which plays an important role in generating an inflammatory response.

Explanation of Solution

General inflammatory response is initiated in the body on exposure to the antigen such as a microorganism. Inflammatory response involves the activation of mast cells and histamine. Histamine causes the vasodilatation at the site of infection and increases the blood flow at that area. Inflammatory response also causes swelling, itching, and redness at the site of infection.

Complement system comprises about 20-30 different types of complement proteins. These proteins are synthesized in the liver. After synthesis of complement protein in the liver, these are released into the bloodstream in an inactive form...
