Chapter 26, Problem 26.13P
Interpretation Introduction

(a)

Interpretation:

The curved-arrow mechanism for the reduction of pyridine-N-oxide by :PCl3 is to be shown.

Concept Introduction:

The compound :PCl3 can act as both nucleophile and electrophile. The lone pair present on the phosphorus acts as nucleophile and the empty d- orbital of the phosphorus atom acts as electrophile. Addition of oxygen atom is oxidation and removal of oxygen atom is reduction. Both oxidation-reduction reactions are known as redox reaction.

Interpretation Introduction

(b)

Interpretation:

The oxidized, reduced species and the electrons involved in the given redox reaction is to be stated.

Concept Introduction:

The addition of hydrogen atom or removal of oxygen atom is known as reduction. The species undergoing reduction is said to get reduced. The addition of oxygen and removal of hydrogen is known as oxidation. The species undergoing oxidation is said to get oxidized.
