Chapter 26, Problem 26.8P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The shift of UV wavelength to lower value upon protonation of aniline and no effect on the UV spectrum of pyridine on protonation is to be explained.

Concept Introduction:

In the UV spectrum of compounds, the extended conjugation results in the shift to higher wavelength known as bathochromic shift. Lowering the delocalization causes the shift to lower wavelength known as hypsochromic shift. Bathochromic shift is also known as red shift and hypsochromic shift is also known as blue shift.

Show how acid derivatives hydrolyze to carboxylic acids under either acidic or basicconditions. Explain why some acid derivatives (amides, for example) require muchstronger conditions for hydrolysis than other derivatives.
Explain why protonating aniline has a dramatic effect on the compound’s UV spectrum, whereas protonating pyridine has only a small effect on that compound’s UV spectrum.
Carbonyl compounds can be protonated on the carbonyl oxygen. Explain why propanoic acid is more readily protonated than propanone.
