a) Sodium oxide

Sodium and oxygen have the following Lewis structures:

In this, the sodium atom loses one valence electron. The oxygen atom needs two electrons to complete its octet. This leaves the sodium ion with a charge of 1+ and oxygen with 2- charge. Hence, two sodium atoms are required for every oxygen atom.

Therefore, the Lewis structure of the compound is as follows:

Hence, the correct chemical formula is Na2O.

b) Aluminum sulfide

Aluminum and sulfur have the following Lewis structures:

The aluminum atom can lose three valence electrons. The sulfur atom needs two electrons to complete its octet. This leaves the aluminum ion with a charge of 3+ and sulfur with a charge of 2-. Hence, three sulfur atoms are required for every two aluminum atoms.

The Lewis structure of the compound is as follows:

Hence, the correct chemical formula is Al2S3
