Introduction:
In all sexually reproducing animals, the identification of paternity can be made by DNA analysis. An offspring receives exactly one-half of the genes from the male and half from the female. Genetic testing can be used to reveal that one-half of the genetic markers in the male match those of their children. Genetic markers that are not maternal should have come from the paternal side. To identify paternity, every nonmaternal marker carried by the offspring must be carried by their female.♂ ♀

Genetic Analysis: An Integrated Approach (2nd Edition)
- Using figure 1 and the following background information answer the following questions. Identification of the genetic cause of hornlessness in cattle has been the subject of intensive genetic and genomic research, culminating in the nomination of two different candidate neomutations on cattle chromosome 1 that are predicted to have arisen 500-1,000 years ago: a complex allele of Friesian origin (PF), an 80,128 base pair (bp) duplication (1909352–1989480 bp), and a second, simple allele of Celtic origin (PC) corresponding to a duplication of 212 bp (chromosome 1 positions 1705834–1706045) in place of a 10-bp deletion (1706051–1706060)We report the use of genome editing using transcription activator-like effector nucleases (TALENs) to introgress the putative PC POLLED allele into the genome of bovine embryo fibroblasts to try and produce a genotype identical to what is achievable using natural mating, but without the attendant genetic drag and admixture. In our previous studies, we…arrow_forwardAssignment 1 A pure strain of Mendel's peas, dominant for all seven of his independently assorting genes, was testcrossed. a) How many different kinds of gametes could each of the parents produce? b) How many different gametes could the F, produce? Assignments Assignment 1 c) If the F, was testcrossed, how many phenotypes would be expected in the offspring and in what proportion? d) How many genotypes would be expected in the F,?arrow_forwardMrs Mumba delivered a baby girl in a certain hospital. Mrs Mumba has blood group O and the father to the girl has blood group AB. Mrs Mumba sues the hospital for giving her a wrong baby whose blood group was 0. (a) Explain using a genetic diagram why Mrs Mumba would win or lose the case. (b) What could have been the correct genotype of the actual father?arrow_forward
- A RFLP is discovered that is linked to the gene for Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy (DMD). DMD is an X-linked, recessive trait. The RFLP is 2 map units from the gene for DMD. Consider the following pedigree and Southern blot using a probe that hybridizes to the RFLP. Which band/s is/are associated with DMD? What is the genotype for individuals 3 and 4? (Remember, this is an X linked disease, so use X’s and Y’s to denote). Individual 9 married a man who does NOT have muscular dystrophy, and she is pregnant. DMD is an X-linked trait. What is the probability for their child to have DMD? An amniocentesis is performed and it is determined that 9’s child in utero has only a 10 kb band that hybridizes to the same probe used above. What can you say about the child now?arrow_forwardA man of blood group A is being sued by a woman of blood group B for paternity. The women’s child is blood group O. A) Is this man the father of this child? Explain. B) If this man actually is the father of this child, specify the genotypes of both parents. C.) If it was impossible for this group A man to be the father of a type O child, regardless of the mother’s genotype, specify his genotype. D.) If a man was blood group AB, could he be the father of a group O child? Why/why not?arrow_forwardA couple, who are both normal, have a daughter who is albino and a son who is normal. a) what is the probability that their normal son is a carrier of the albinism gene? Show your work. b) the couple wants to have 3 more children; what is the probability that they will have 3 normal girls? Show your work.arrow_forward
- A female cheetah recently gave birth while in captivity; however, the paternity of the infant is unclear. Scientists tested the DNA from two male cheetahs, along with the female and offspring. The resulting electrophoresis gel is shown. Based on the gel electrophoresis results, what can be concluded about the paternity of the offspring?arrow_forwardAs a graduate student, you join a lab and you are looking through some old notebooks. You find a linkage map someone has drawn. G--15 mu-----T----10 mu-------B If you plan to complete a test cross with a GtB/gTb male, A) What are all of the expected progeny genotypes? B.) How many of each genotype would you expect if you collected 1000 progeny?arrow_forwardIf a Mother's genotype is IAi and her Daughter's genotype is ii and the mother claims a man who is type B as the father... a) Is that possible? Explain. b) The accused man can prove that both of his parents are type AB. Is it possible for him to be type B? If so, what is his genotype? Explain. d) Does the answer in part c change the answer in part b? Explain.arrow_forward
- Can someone show me why this is correct? I will like to see the possible genotypes and phenotypes together that proves the answer.arrow_forwardIn man, muscular dystrophy is a condition in which the muscles waste away during early life and may result in a shorter life expectancy. It is due to a sex-linked, recessive gene. A certain couple has five children – three boys (ages 1yr, 3yrs, and 10yrs old) and two girls (ages 5yrs and 7yrs old). The oldest boy shows the symptoms of this disease. You are their family physician and they come to you for advice. What would you tell them about the chances of their other children developing the disease?arrow_forwardGiven the karyotype shown at right, is this a male or a female? Normal or abnormal?
