Chapter 16, Problem 29RQ
Summary Introduction
To review:
The insulin-dependent processes apart from carbohydrate
Introduction:
Insulin is a pancreatic hormone produced by beta cells. Its major role is to lower down theblood glucose to a normal level. It acts by increasing cellular uptake of glucose through the recruitment of glucose transporters on the cellular membrane. Its hyper-secretion causes hypoglycemia and hypo-secretion causes diabetesmellitus type II.

Question 4.
Diabetes mellitus possesses a serious health challenge worldwide and there has been an
increased awareness for self-monitoring and point of care testing. The development of self-
monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) is probably the most important advance in controlling
diabetes since the discovery of insulin.
c) Compare the sensitivity and accuracy of glucose meter with a spectrophotometer.
d) Elaborate the limitation of glucose meter in diagnostic application?
e) Examine the advantage of DNA based biosensor as compared to enzyme biosensor
The reduction of cell-surface receptors in response to stimulation by a specific hormone molecule is called_____________________.
_________________ is a component of Coenzyme A, which is vital to the catabolism of carbohydrates and fats for the production of ATP.

The CF gene codes for a protein called the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) which functions as a cAMP-regulated chloride channel. The protein has two membrane-spanning domains, two domains that interact with ATP, and one regulatory domain. The most common defect is in the gene for one of the ATP binding domains. The result is a protein that does not fold correctly in the endoplasmic reticulum, is not properly glycosylated, and is nor transported to the cell surface. Rather, it is degraded in the cytosol within proteasomes. Drugs that foster chaperone interaction with the mutant protein are a potential therapeutic approach.
